Handmade Sofas in Lagos: How to Choose a Sofa Built for Nigerian Homes (and Weather)

Handmade sofas in Lagos have a harder job than sofas almost anywhere else. A sofa is the piece of furniture you use most, and heat, humidity, air-conditioning running all day, harmattan dust and a staircase that is narrower than it looked on the floor plan all test how well it was made.

As a sofa manufacturer in Lagos, we wrote this guide to explain what separates a handmade sofa from a factory-made or imported one, how to choose fabric or leather for the Lagos climate, how to size a sofa for apartments and duplexes, and what to ask about price, lead time and care. It ends with a 7-point checklist to take with you when you shop for handmade sofas in Lagos.

Handmade sofas in Lagos vs factory-made or imported sofas

From across a showroom, most sofas look alike. The differences are inside, in the parts you cannot see once the upholstery is on, and they are the first things to ask any sofa manufacturer about.

The frame

The frame carries every person who sits on the sofa, every day, for years. Ask what it is made from. Properly dried solid hardwood or a well-made steel frame holds its shape, while frames made mostly from soft board or chipboard tend to creak, loosen and crack at the joints. Some Majeurs designs, such as the Yachi, deliberately show a slim steel frame beneath plush cushioning.

Joinery

In a well-made frame, the joints are glued, dowelled or properly jointed, not just stapled. Staples and nails on their own are quick to use in a factory, but they loosen over time, which is what makes an older sofa wobble.

Foam and cushions

Cheap foam feels soft in the shop and flattens within a year. Ask about foam density and whether the cushions have a firmer core with a softer wrap. A good seat springs back after you stand up and supports you without letting you sink to the frame.

Repairability

A sofa built locally can be re-covered, re-foamed or repaired by the people who made it. An imported sofa often cannot, because the parts and the maker are on another continent. That alone can add years to the life of a piece, and it is one of the strongest arguments for Nigerian furniture made close to home.

Choosing upholstery for Lagos heat and humidity

For handmade sofas in Lagos, upholstery is where the climate matters most. Think about who uses the room, how much sun it gets, whether the AC runs all day and how easily you want to clean it.

Leather

Leather suits busy homes because spills can be blotted off quickly, and it looks better with age. Majeurs leather is top-quality animal leather hide, used on sofas such as the Uzoe, Fansa and Ayanfe. In Lagos, keep leather at least 50 cm from AC vents and other heat sources and out of direct sun, dust it weekly and condition it every 6 to 12 months so it does not dry out.

Velvet

Velvet feels rich and holds deep colour, as on the Tiambi and Uzuri. Brush or vacuum it in the direction of the pile, blot spills rather than rubbing them, steam any crushed areas and rotate the cushions so they wear evenly.

Woven and jacquard fabrics

Woven jacquards and textured weaves bring pattern and a soft, matte finish, and they are the most common choice across our sofa range. They suit living rooms with light to moderate everyday use and should be dry-cleaned rather than washed at home. Our Materials & Care guide lists every fabric with its composition and care.

Pests and humidity

Humidity encourages pests in poorly treated timber. Every Majeurs piece is treated against pests before delivery. Keeping the room ventilated, cleaning under the sofa and keeping it off damp floors all help it stay that way.

Sizing a sofa for Lagos apartments and duplexes

The most common sofa mistake is not the style, it is the size. Before you choose a design, measure:

  • The wall or space where the sofa will sit, leaving 45 to 60 cm to walk around it and between it and the coffee table.
  • Every doorway, corridor and corner on the way in, including the gate and the building entrance.
  • The staircase or lift. In high-rise buildings, a small lift is one of the most common reasons a large piece cannot be delivered.
  • The seat height and depth you find comfortable, using a sofa you already like as a reference.

Two-seater, three-seater or L-shape?

A two-seater suits a study, a bedroom corner or a compact lounge. A three-seater is the standard for most living rooms. If you host often or have a large open-plan duplex lounge, an L-shaped or modular sofa uses the corner well and seats more people without crowding the room.

Modular sofas such as Ayomi and Iretì are built in sections that can be configured as a three-seater or extended into a sectional, which also makes them easier to carry up stairs. For a fixed corner, Orisa is a full L-shaped sectional.

If no standard size fits, we can make a handmade sofa to your measurements. See how our custom-made furniture service works.

Inside the build: the Imọ̀lẹ̀ sofa

Imọ̀lẹ̀ means light in Yoruba, the kind of light a room is built around. We designed Imọ̀lẹ̀ for long conversations, slow mornings and family evenings, with a clean silhouette and support that holds you without letting you sink.

Like every Majeurs piece, Imọ̀lẹ̀ is made to commission by hand in our Lagos workshop, so it is built for your order rather than taken from a warehouse. It comes in fabric and in leather, and you can ask for another colour or material on WhatsApp straight from the product page.

The makers who build our sofas are trained to production standards, and the Majeurs Furniture Academy trains the next generation of furniture makers inside the same working environment.

Price, lead time and care

What drives the price of a handmade sofa

  • Size and number of seats. More seats means more timber, foam and upholstery.
  • Upholstery. Leather generally costs more than woven fabric.
  • Configuration. Modular and L-shaped sectionals use more sections and more material.
  • Customisation. Custom sizes, colours and details are quoted individually.

Current prices for every design are on each product page in our sofa collection. Custom work is quoted once we understand your space and your choice of material.

Lead time

Because every sofa is made to commission, it is built after you order rather than shipped from stock. We give you an estimated delivery time when you order and keep you informed if anything changes. If you are furnishing for a move-in date, an event or a short-let launch, tell us early so we can plan production around it.

Warranty

Every Majeurs piece carries a 12-month warranty from delivery or installation: the frame and joinery are covered for 12 months and upholstery stitching for 6 months. Keep the Majeurs tag on the piece and follow the care guide to keep your warranty valid.

Everyday care in a Lagos home

  • Keep the sofa out of direct sun and at least 50 cm from AC vents and heaters.
  • Vacuum or brush it weekly, especially during harmattan, when dust wears fabric faster.
  • Blot spills straight away. Never soak upholstery or use household detergents or solvents on it.
  • Rotate and plump the cushions so they wear evenly.
  • Condition leather every 6 to 12 months.

7-point checklist for buying handmade sofas in Lagos

Take this list with you to any showroom or workshop, and ask every sofa manufacturer the same seven questions so you can compare like for like.

  1. Frame: What is the frame made from, and how is the timber dried and treated?
  2. Joinery: Are the joints glued, dowelled or properly jointed, or mainly stapled?
  3. Foam: What density is the seat foam, and will the cushions hold their shape after a year of daily use?
  4. Upholstery: Is the leather genuine animal hide, and how should each fabric be cleaned?
  5. Size and access: Will it fit your room, doorways, stairs and lift?
  6. Warranty: What is covered, for how long, and is it in writing?
  7. Aftercare: Can the maker repair, re-foam or re-upholster it in Lagos later?

A well-made handmade sofa comes with clear answers to all seven. If a maker cannot answer them, keep looking.

Frequently asked questions

Are handmade couches better than imported sofas?

A well-made handmade sofa is built to your size and finish, can be inspected before you buy and can be repaired or re-upholstered locally by the people who made it. Imported sofas also carry shipping and import costs, and repairs can be hard to arrange.

What is the best sofa material for the Lagos climate?

It depends on how you use the room. Leather is easy to wipe and suits busy homes if it is kept away from sun and AC vents. Velvet and woven jacquards feel softer and suit living rooms with light to moderate use. Keep any sofa out of direct sun, and condition leather every 6 to 12 months.

How do I protect a sofa from humidity and pests in Lagos?

Every Majeurs piece is treated against pests before delivery. After that, keep the room ventilated, vacuum under and around the sofa regularly, blot spills quickly and keep it off damp floors.

What size sofa do I need for my living room?

Measure the space and leave 45 to 60 cm to walk around the sofa. Most living rooms suit a three-seater, while large open-plan lounges suit an L-shaped or modular sofa. Measure doorways, stairs and lifts as well.

Can Majeurs make a handmade sofa to my measurements?

Yes. Every sofa is made to commission, and we can adapt the size, fabric, leather and colour. Send us your measurements through our custom-made furniture page or on WhatsApp.

Where can I see handmade sofas in Lagos before I buy?
