The welding and fabrication lead craft instructor Role
The welding and fabrication lead craft instructor is responsible for training students in the practical metalworking and fabrication skills used in furniture production.
This role combines technical expertise and mentorship.
You will guide students through the full fabrication process, from metal measurement and cutting to welding, grinding, finishing, and assembly, while ensuring strict safety standards are maintained in the workshop.
This is not a classroom teaching role.
It is a hands-on workshop leadership position.
Key Responsibilities
- Training & Skill Development
- Teach students core welding and fabrication techniques.
- Demonstrate metal cutting, grinding, welding, and finishing methods.
- Train students on safe and correct use of welding equipment and fabrication tools.
- Introduce basic metal fabrication used in furniture production.
- Supervise daily welding workshop activities.
Practical Production
- Guide students in producing fabricated furniture components such as metal frames, bases, and structural elements.
- Ensure weld quality, alignment, and finishing standards meet acceptable quality levels
- Teach efficient material usage and fabrication discipline.
Workshop Management
- Maintain welding machines, grinders, and fabrication tools.
- Ensure metal stock and materials are properly organised and stored.
- Enforce workshop safety procedures, including protective equipment and ventilation.
Student Assessment
- Evaluate student fabrication projects and skill progression
- Provide constructive feedback on welding quality and workmanship
- Support students preparing for welding trade certification or assessments

First 90 Days Expectations
The first three months in this role focus on establishing safe workshop practices and building strong foundational skills in fabrication among students.
Within your first 90 days, you will be expected to:
Month 1 — Orientation & Workshop Control
- Understand the fabrication curriculum and training structure
- Assess the current skill level of students in metalworking and welding
- Establish strict safety procedures for welding equipment and tools
- Ensure all fabrication tools and workstations are organised and safe
Month 2 — Structured Skills Development
- Deliver structured training sessions covering core welding and fabrication techniques
- Supervise students completing their first fabrication exercises
- Introduce quality standards for welds, alignment, and finishing
- Begin documenting student skill progression
Month 3 — Production & Training Output
- Ensure students are confidently performing basic welding and fabrication tasks
- Supervise the completion of at least one full fabrication project by each student
- Improve workshop organisation and safety compliance
- Deliver a progress report outlining student development
Success in the first 90 days will be measured by student progress, workshop discipline, and the quality of fabricated components produced during training.
Candidate Profile
You are an experienced welder or fabricator who enjoys mentoring others.
You take pride in craftsmanship, precision, and safety and want to help train the next generation of skilled artisans.
Minimum Requirements
- National Technical Certificate (NTC) or equivalent welding/fabrication qualification
- National Skills Qualification (NSQ Level 3–5) or equivalent certification
- Minimum 5 years of practical experience in welding or metal fabrication
Ideal Candidate
- Experience supervising apprentices or trainees
- Strong practical knowledge of welding equipment and fabrication tools
- High standards of workmanship and finishing quality
- Strong discipline around workshop safety and organisation
Who Should Not Apply
This role is not suitable for individuals who:
- prefer classroom teaching over practical workshop work
- have limited welding or fabrication experience
- are not comfortable supervising and correcting students during hands-on work
