The Upholstery Lead Craft Instructor Role
The upholstery lead craft instructor is responsible for training students in professional upholstery techniques used in furniture production.
This role combines technical craftsmanship and mentorship.
You will guide students through the complete upholstery process — from frame preparation and foam selection to fabric cutting, stitching, padding, and finishing.
This is not a classroom teaching role.
It is a hands-on workshop leadership position where you train students through real production work.
Key Responsibilities
Training & Skill Development
- Teach professional upholstery techniques used in furniture manufacturing
- Demonstrate foam cutting, padding, webbing, and spring installation
- Train students on fabric cutting, stitching, and upholstery assembly
- Teach correct tool usage, including staple guns, sewing machines, and upholstery tools
- Supervise daily upholstery workshop activities
Practical Production
- Guide students in upholstering furniture such as sofas, chairs, headboards, and benches.
- Ensure correct fabric alignment, tension, and finishing quality.
- Teach students efficient material usage and production discipline.
Workshop Management
- Maintain upholstery tools, sewing machines, and equipment.
- Ensure materials such as fabrics, foam, batting, and webbing are properly stored.
- Enforce workshop cleanliness and safety standards
Student Assessment
- Evaluate student upholstery projects and skill development.
- Provide feedback on craftsmanship and finishing quality.
- Support students preparing for upholstery trade assessments.

First 90 Days Expectations
The first three months in this role focus on building workshop discipline and strong upholstery fundamentals among students.
Within your first 90 days, you will be expected to:
Month 1 — Orientation & Workshop Control
- Understand the training curriculum and upholstery workflow at Majeurs Academy.
- Assess the upholstery skill level of students.
- Establish workshop discipline and tool-safety standards.
- Ensure upholstery tools, machines, and materials are properly organised.
Month 2 — Structured Skills Development
- Deliver structured training on upholstery fundamentals
- Supervise students completing their first upholstery projects
- Introduce quality standards for finishing and detailing
- Begin documenting student skill progression
Month 3 — Production & Training Output
- Ensure students are confidently executing core upholstery techniques.
- Supervise the successful completion of full upholstery projects.
- Improve workshop organisation, safety compliance, and production quality.
- Deliver a progress report on student development and skill levels.
Success in the first 90 days will be measured by student progress, workshop discipline, and the quality of upholstered furniture produced during training.
Candidate Profile
You are an experienced upholsterer who enjoys teaching others.
You care about craftsmanship and finishing quality and want to help train the next generation of furniture makers.
Minimum Requirements
- National Technical Certificate (NTC) or equivalent trade qualification
- National Skills Qualification (NSQ Level 3–5) or equivalent upholstery certification
- Minimum 5 years of practical experience in upholstery or furniture production
Ideal Candidate
- Experience supervising apprentices or trainees
- Strong practical knowledge of upholstery tools and sewing machines
- High standards of finishing and craftsmanship.
- Strong discipline around workshop safety and organisation.
Who Should Not Apply
This role is not suitable for individuals who:
- prefer classroom teaching over practical workshop work.
- have limited real upholstery experience.
- are not comfortable supervising and correcting students during hands-on work.
