The Furniture and Woodwork Facilitator Role

The furniture and woodwork facilitator is responsible for training students in the practical and technical skills required to become professional furniture makers.

This role is both craft mentor and workshop leader.

You will guide trainees through the full furniture-making process — from raw timber selection to finished products — while instilling the discipline, precision, and work ethic required in professional workshops.

This is not a classroom teaching role. It is a hands-on workshop leadership position.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Skill Development

• Teach practical carpentry and furniture-making techniques
• Demonstrate wood selection, measurement, joinery, cutting, assembly, and finishing
• Train students on safe and correct use of hand tools and woodworking machines
• Supervise daily workshop activities and ensure safe work practices

Practical Production

• Guide students in producing furniture such as tables, chairs, cabinets, and wardrobes
• Ensure projects meet acceptable quality standards
• Teach efficient material usage and professional finishing techniques

Workshop Management

• Maintain workshop equipment and ensure tools are properly stored and maintained
• Monitor inventory of timber, hardware, and consumables
• Enforce workshop safety and cleanliness standards

Student Assessment

• Evaluate student projects and skill progression
• Provide constructive feedback and coaching
• Support students preparing for trade tests or professional certification

First 90 Days Expectations

The first three months in this role are focused on establishing strong workshop discipline, training structure, and student progress.

Within your first 90 days, you will be expected to:

Month 1 — Orientation & Workshop Control

• Understand the training structure and curriculum of Majeurs Academy
• Assess the current skill level of all students under your supervision
• Establish clear workshop discipline and safety standards
• Ensure all tools, machines, and workstations are properly organised and maintained

Month 2 — Structured Skills Development

• Deliver structured training sessions covering key carpentry and furniture-making
  techniques
• Supervise students producing their first complete furniture projects
• Ensure quality control standards are introduced and maintained in all student work
• Begin documenting student progress and competency levels

Month 3 — Production & Training Output

• Ensure students are confidently executing core woodworking techniques
• Supervise the successful completion of at least one full furniture production project by each student
• Demonstrate improvement in workshop organisation, safety compliance, and work quality
• Provide a progress report outlining student development and areas for improvement

Success in the first 90 days will be measured by student progress, workshop discipline, and the quality of furniture produced during training.

Candidate Profile

You are a skilled furniture maker who enjoys mentoring others.
You care deeply about craftsmanship and want to pass your knowledge to the next
generation.

Minimum Requirements

• National Technical Certificate (NTC) or NABTEB in Carpentry & Joinery
• National Skills Qualification (NSQ Level 3–5) or equivalent trade certification
• Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in carpentry or furniture production

Ideal Candidate

• Experience supervising apprentices or trainees
• Strong practical knowledge of woodworking tools and machinery
• High standards of craftsmanship and finishing quality
• Strong discipline around workshop safety and organisation

Who Should Not Apply

This role is not suitable for individuals who:

• prefer classroom teaching over practical workshop work
• have limited real furniture-making experience
• are not comfortable supervising and correcting students during hands-on work
